Feedback Loops in Processes

It is very important that your processes contain feedback loops. Feedback is an important feature of viable systems. If your process flow charts only connect boxes with arrows pointing forward (or downward), there is room for improvement. The opportunity for improvement should be created at checkpoints.

Status findings should be communicated promptly to those involved in the process so that they can adjust to them. Impending schedule, quality, quantity and other significant deviations should be communicated to those involved in advance so that countermeasures can be initiated at an early stage. Traffic light systems in workflow applications, for example, are suitable for this purpose.
