What is the Sustainable Process Index (SPI)?

As an alternative to the ecological footprint, all emissions and all material and energy consumption can be determined using the more complex Sustainable Process Index (SPI).

In addition to direct land consumption, the SPI also takes into account the consumption of renewable and non-renewable raw materials and energy sources, including fossil fuels, and emissions to air, water and soil. Even “gray emissions” associated with the production and operation of infrastructure can be captured by the SPI.

The SPI is composed of a weighted combination of various metrics that include natural absorption and renewal rates.
