The method of progressive abstraction supports creativity by gradually leading out of a perspective of blindness by formulating the problem at a higher level of abstraction and searching for a solution approach at this level. Behind the method is the assumption that every problem has a solution if one only abstracts sufficiently. The solution approach found at any level of abstraction can then be related to the concrete problem. This method requires identifying the essential problem and solution structures. It helps by mentally detaching the solution seekers from their immediate professional environment.
