Adaptor strategy: Adapting to the environment

As an adaptor, you accept the environmental conditions as given. Sources of your value creation lie outside your sphere of influence, and you accept this. You adapt to the environmental conditions as best you can and seek a defensible position within these conditions. You look for attractive business areas within the framework conditions and protect your business as effectively as possible through proprietary standards and/or property rights. One of your success factors is that you can react agilely to changes with your organization. You achieve this by hedging your activities: You make multi-pronged investments and keep your organization flexible so that you can act opportunistically.

As an adaptor, you closely follow movements in relevant markets and quickly initiate adjustments in your organization.

Examples of Adaptors are Opel, and the South Korean car manufacturer, SsangYong Motor Company.
